BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. LVMI (Left Ventricular Mass Index) is a measure of heart muscle mass adjusted for body size using BSA (Body Surface Area).
The calculator uses these formulas:
Where:
BMI: Helps classify underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity. Higher BMI is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
LVMI: Important for assessing left ventricular hypertrophy, a strong predictor of cardiovascular events.
Tips: Enter weight in kg, height in meters, and optionally LV mass in grams. All values must be positive numbers.
Q1: What are normal BMI values?
A: Underweight (<18.5), Normal (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), Obesity (≥30).
Q2: What are normal LVMI values?
A: Typically <95 g/m² for women and <115 g/m² for men.
Q3: Why use BSA-adjusted LV mass?
A: BSA adjustment accounts for differences in body size when comparing LV mass between individuals.
Q4: Are there limitations to BMI?
A: BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass, and may be less accurate in athletes or elderly.
Q5: How is LV mass measured?
A: Typically by echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or CT scan.
